What the HEPA Standard Means

A filter that qualifies as True HEPA must remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles at the most penetrating particle size of 0.3 microns. This threshold was set because 0.3-micron particles are the hardest to capture — particles both larger and smaller are actually captured at higher rates due to the physics of filtration (impaction, interception, and diffusion). This means True HEPA filters are effective across a wide range of particle sizes.
Products labeled "HEPA-type," "HEPA-like," or "99% HEPA" have not been certified to meet the standard. These terms are marketing descriptions, not verified performance guarantees. When filtration is a priority for allergy management, look for confirmation of True HEPA certification.
What HEPA Filters Capture — and Do Not
HEPA filters are effective at capturing particles, including:
- Pollen grains (typically 10–100 microns — much larger than the most penetrating size, captured at near 100%)
- Pet dander (Fel d 1 and Can f 1) — partially airborne, partially surface-deposited; air filtration captures the airborne fraction
- Mold spores (typically 2–10 microns)
- Dust mite body fragments and fecal pellets — however, these heavy particles settle quickly and spend little time airborne compared to lighter allergens like cat dander
- Fine dust particles, tobacco smoke particles, and some combustion particles
HEPA filters do not remove:
- Gases, vapors, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
- Odors (including pet odors and cooking smells)
- Carbon monoxide, radon, or other molecular-level air contaminants
- Allergens already deposited on surfaces — carpets, upholstery, bedding
Portable HEPA Air Cleaners
Standalone portable HEPA air cleaners are the most practical way to apply HEPA-level filtration to specific rooms. They work by drawing room air through the HEPA filter and recirculating the cleaned air back into the room. The rate at which a unit can clean the air in a given room is expressed as the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), which is measured separately for tobacco smoke, pollen, and dust. A unit's CADR should be matched to the room size — oversized rooms receive inadequate filtration, and undersized rooms may be cleaned too slowly to be useful. Running the unit continuously at a medium to high setting provides better ongoing filtration than intermittent use.
HEPA Vacuum Filtration
Conventional vacuum cleaners can actually worsen airborne allergen levels by exhausting fine particles back into the room through their exhaust. HEPA-filtered vacuums are designed to trap captured particles within the filtration system rather than releasing them through the exhaust. This makes them significantly better for allergy management than standard vacuums. For people with dust mite or pet dander allergy, using a HEPA vacuum is an important complement to other source-control measures. Note that vacuuming itself temporarily stirs up settled surface particles — allergic individuals may prefer to leave the room briefly after vacuuming.
HVAC Filtration
Most residential HVAC systems use filters rated on the MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) scale. Standard fiberglass filters (MERV 1–4) do not capture fine allergen particles. Higher-MERV filters (MERV 11–13) can capture many common allergens including pollen, mold spores, and cat dander, but are not equivalent to True HEPA. Most residential HVAC systems cannot accommodate a genuine True HEPA filter because its density restricts airflow to a degree that would reduce system efficiency and airflow. Filter Fit and Air Bypass
A HEPA filter only captures what passes through it. If air bypasses the filter — through gaps around the filter frame in a purifier housing, or through an ill-fitting HVAC filter — unfiltered air is recirculated. Effective filtration requires proper installation with a snug fit and no gaps. This applies to both portable air cleaners and HVAC filters. Check that the filter you are using is the correct size for your device and that it seats properly when installed.
Maintenance and Replacement
HEPA filters have a finite lifespan. As they accumulate particles, airflow through the filter decreases and the unit becomes less effective. Most manufacturers specify a replacement interval — often every 6 to 12 months for the HEPA filter in a portable unit, though this varies based on usage intensity and the air quality in your home. Pre-filters (which capture larger particles before they reach the HEPA filter) should be cleaned or replaced more frequently. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for your specific device. Using a filter beyond its service life undermines the filtration benefit and can strain the unit's motor.
Limitations in Context
HEPA filtration is a useful tool but not a complete solution for allergy management. It addresses airborne particles in the filtered space but cannot remove allergens from surfaces, reduce mite populations in bedding, or eliminate the source of pet allergens. It should be combined with source-control strategies — allergen-proof mattress encasements, regular washing of bedding, and reducing carpeting — for meaningful overall allergen load reduction.
