A unit with a higher pollen CADR will cycle the air in a room more frequently. A general sizing approach is to choose a unit whose pollen CADR is at least two-thirds of the room's square footage in square feet. How Air Purifiers Perform for Different Allergens

Pollen

Pollen grains are relatively large (10–100 microns) and are efficiently captured by HEPA filters. However, outdoor pollen levels affecting indoor air are primarily controlled by keeping windows closed during peak pollen periods. An air purifier helps clean indoor air when some pollen has entered but is most valuable as part of a strategy that also minimizes new pollen entry.

Pet Dander

Pet allergens such as Fel d 1 (cat) and Can f 1 (dog) are lightweight, sticky proteins that remain airborne for hours and adhere to surfaces throughout the home. Running a HEPA purifier continuously in rooms where pets spend time — especially the bedroom — is consistently associated with lower airborne allergen levels in the research literature. Smoke and Odors

HEPA filters capture smoke particles effectively. Odors and gases require activated carbon filtration, which is a different mechanism. Placement

Place the unit in the room where you spend the most time — the bedroom is the highest priority for most allergy sufferers. Position it away from walls and furniture to allow unrestricted airflow from all sides. Running it on a medium or high setting provides better ongoing filtration than low or intermittent use.

Ozone-Producing Devices — A Caution

Ozone generators and some ionizer-type air cleaners intentionally or incidentally produce ozone. Ozone is a respiratory irritant — at concentrations needed to affect airborne contaminants, it can worsen respiratory symptoms, trigger asthma, and irritate the airways of allergy sufferers. The EPA advises against using ozone generators in occupied spaces.
